Hermanus Night Shelter Project
- Charity Ride
COVID has shown us that anyone can be hit by adversity at any time. People can be homeless for all sorts of reasons. It may be the result of making some poor decisions, sickness, job loss, a family crisis or simply bad luck. Bad things happening at the wrong time.
Acts of kindness and generosity personified in this group of Harley-Davidson® Owners and their friends who ensured their commitment to assist and support the Hermanus Night Shelter Association with the funding of a multi-functional and aesthetically pleasing building where the homeless can come for a hot shower, a hot meal and a warm bed.
"When H.O.G. Cape Town was searching for a venue to host its annual Cape Seal Rally," reports Malvin Meyer, "the quaint town of Hermanus was identified. We were welcomed with open arms by the authorities who really wanted to show off their town to its newly found friends."
The Cape Town "HOGsters" would not use the town for a few days for their annual rally without giving something small back to Hermanus for its hospitality. The chapter started searching for a charity where they could put something back, something that would be a lasting legacy for years to come.
After consultations with various charitable entities, a decision was made to aid and support the Hermanus Night Shelter Association with the construction of a brand new building for the homeless and destitute. A place they could call home, a place where they could find shelter against the elements, a place where they are safe, clean and fed. A place where they are welcomed at night.
During the day the building will become a venue for pre-schoolers, a meeting facility for the aged and a centre where skills are taught. In addition, the unused land on the property will be used to grow vegetables for the shelter with the excess sold to the local community.
The construction of the building started on 09 April 2018 after a well-attended ground breaking ceremony by their Patron and the Chairman of HNSA. The H.O.G. Chapter Director at the time also attended the ceremony amongst other dignitaries. H.O.G. Cape Town was recognised as one of the key partners for the building construction.
As indicated in the preamble, they have donated every cent raised at the Cape Seal Rally over the past four years, in addition, the HOGsters arranged for the donation of JoJo water stowage tanks, as well as facilitating the donation of 250 bags of cement from PPC. PPC also arranged training in the latest techniques of plastering and bricklaying for 30 local artisans from the community.
It is H.O.G. Cape Town Chapter’s wish to continue donating until the completion of the Night Shelter Building. What a great achievement for the Harley-Davidson brand to be associated with such a generous and caring group of enthusiasts who just want to have fun, “Live to Ride” whilst paying it forward!
In July 2020, construction of the Hermanus Night Shelter reached a new milestone when the concrete floor slab was poured and H.O.G. Cape Town's water stowage tanks were delivered.
